In addition to the items included in this kit you will need scissors and good quality p.v.a. Children should be encouraged to think creatively by being asked to bring craft materials from home. Old buttons, beads, scraps of lace, braid and pieces of fabric can all be used imaginatively. All the craft items could be placed in a central area. This will encourage the sharing of ideas as well as materials. We suggest the wiggly eyes are distributed separately as they€™re easily lost.
The project could start with a discussion about skin tones. Children can then choose which colour person they wish to make. We suggest the felt clothing is selected and glued in place before other materials. Surplus clothing can then be put with the other materials and cut up for decoration.
The people shapes could be made into puppets by gluing a lolly stick on the back. The puppets could be used for role play or to dramatise a story.
Children may want to depict a favourite member of their family or a friend. The name could be written on the back of the stick.
The people could be made into a mural as part of a multi-cultural project.
Arrange the figures round a map with thread attached to their country of origin. This could lead to a more serious discussion about the meaning of a multi-cultural society.
Not suitable for children under 36 months
Contains small parts which could represent a choking hazard.
